“Having been born and raised in Kenya, and now living as a British citizen in the UK, I am inspired by different cultures and am constantly seeking to harmonise cultural boundaries through my art work.Following my Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at London’s Camberwell, University of Arts, I travelled extensively to enhance my studies of different cultures. I have been particularly inspired by the intricacies of the Far East and the vibrant, visual cultures of South America. The urban street art manifest in Valparaiso’s (Chile) murals inspired me to work with vibrant colours to capture the intense passion at the heart of the local community. The French artist, C215, has also served as an inspiration to me in this genre. Whilst travelling in Ecuador, South America I encountered firsthand the work of Oswaldo Guayasamin; an artist whose work encouraged me to explore the raw emotions and feelings expressed by humans in any given situation. Using this focus of raw emotion enabled me to use art to explore the tensions within the socio-political psyche of my then hometown of London following the 7/7 bombings. Without needing to use words, art can communicate the inner emotions of so many.My sketchbooks reflect this passion for capturing intricate emotions and I constantly draw from my surroundings: people, buildings, nature can all converge on the one page, each idea dictating the shape of the next to communicate most clearly. In essence, I believe that art can transcend linguistic and cultural barriers to become a visual, physical and emotional form of communication. As an artist, I am seeking to create a dialogue between artist and audience using the medium of art and am thus aiming to eliminate social and cultural boundaries”. Meha Hindocha
