“This is one of those great Manchester buildings that lost its original purpose but has been cleverly preserved. It is an immediately recognisable feature of Manchester’s Northern Quarter. I painted this from sketches drawn on a bright August morning as the sun was catching the amazing stone and brickwork. It makes me think of going out for an NQ breakfast”. Henry Martin
Henry Martin is a Manchester based artist, working in oil, acrylic and watercolour. In his work he seeks to promote the wonders of his adopted city. He likes that moment when direct sunlight hits a building, creating strong contrasts between light and shadow, as in the 1930 railway posters. He also likes the evening of colours at twilight. He has lived and worked in Manchester since 2000 and still finds something new, odd and fascinating each day.
