“There’s that great twilight moment on a chilly Manchester evening when you’re almost in the Northern Quarter and you know that any moment now you’ll either be in a warm and noisy bar or on a tram on your way home. That’s what I was trying to catch when I painted this. I did some sketches sat on a step on a summer afternoon (someone gave me 10p!) and then messed around until I’d got the evening colours as I wanted them”. Henry Martin
Henry Martin is a Manchester based artist, working in oil, acrylic and watercolour. In his work he seeks to promote the wonders of his adopted city. He likes that moment when direct sunlight hits a building, creating strong contrasts between light and shadow, as in the 1930 railway posters. He also likes the evening of colours at twilight. He has lived and worked in Manchester since 2000 and still finds something new, odd and fascinating each day.
